Social Media can be a great thing for publishers but it also can be a waste of money for some. The problem with marketing on Social media, especially Facebook, is that small companies have to pay Facebook to actually get their word out. This on the face of it sounds like a normal thing but unfortunately the adverts are often a waste of money because of the way the system works, you can choose where you want your product to be shown but in reality there our places in LEDCs where people are paid to click likes on pages which have paid for advertising to artificially inflate the page. 11/25/2014 06:39:25 am
I agree that social media is a great way to get your name out and advertise your product as a publisher, as it is with all forms of media and entertainment. It can, however, agitate and annoy some consumers and could be critical to the point that they "unfollow" the person that is doing the self-promotion.
This is an insightful approach into social media and its affect on publishing but it could perhaps be elaborated to make this argument even stronger; you quote in your conclusion that social media "may be the most important means of marketing in the near future', but you do not elaborate greatly on the benefits that they provide: do you agree with the idea that they are beneficial because they "allow publishers to read their customer's opinions, track their interests, or even ask them directly how they feel about a product" (Wiesenhahn, 2013).
